Now to learn a little about domains...

Why You Would Want Your Own Domain Name?
Having your own domain name is both smart and prudent for many web sites and people who want to set up blogs.  To begin with, if you want to build credibility and a strong brand identification around your web site or blog, a domain name that reflects the essence of what you do is the right step to take.  The right name enhances the web site or blog and makes it easy for people to both find you and remember your name.  Domain names also give you the added future of email addresses that include the domain name in it.  Such as your name @domain name.com which also boosts your search engine ranking.

Things To Consider When Choosing Your Domain Name.
There are just as many factors when you think about choosing the name of a person as there are as many choices when you choose a name for a web site or blog.  These are a few of the considerations when make a decision and choose a name.  There is no right or wrong answers but keep these things in mind to help you make the best decision.

The Goals and Objectives of Your Web Site or Blog.
Keep both your long term and short term objectives in mind.
1. What is the essence of your web site or blog.
2. Is it a static web site showing company information or a personal blog showing your personal style.
3. What do you hope to achieve with your website or blog.
4. What is the main theme of your web site or blog.  Is it product or service oriented.

This should give you the idea.  You need to consider your overall strategy when choosing your Domain name and business name and ideally they match and or the same.

People search web sites and blogs for many reasons, and generally They come from these main areas;
1. Referrals and Recommendations
2. Searches for specific web sites
3 People seeking information

Different sides of the same coin; Keywords and Brands
1 Keywords-these domain names include keywords in their names.  For example, I chose EasyProductLauncher.com as a way to both identify my company name and to tie it into the keywords used when searching for selling new products.  The search engines review the words in your domain name when deciding what your web site or blog is all about.

2 Branding Domains- try to establish an identity with a name that may or may not have a meaning behind it.  As example, Google doesn't mean anything, until thy branded it, and use it as their corporate name and identity, including their domain name.  Now Google it means a lot...like 100's of millions in value.

Open your magic ball and Look into the future.
Many times the name you choose up front is a little myopic, or near sighted.   For example, let's say you invented a line of products that related specifically to women, women with children.  So you name the product TheLawnPlace.com for serving yards.  Along comes a new product opportunity for a flower shop.  How does that tie in to your name.  Had you maybe used TheGardenPlace, everything related to it ties?  So when you look into the future, look at not what you have today, but what might evolve with a successful business.

What about length of your name?
est names are less that 15 characters.  On the other end of the spectrum, I think the count is 67 letters.  But let's be realistic.  Don't expect me to type in 67 characters, and if I do, I won't do it twice and I will move on if I misspell or miss a letter.  Keep it simple.

What's hot right now?
I am learning quite a bit about alliteration.  These are words that may or may not rhyme, but most certainly use the same letters.  For example here's an alliteration and a rhyme.  Bits and Bytes for computer software and Fancy Nancy for a line of high end fashions.

A few do not's
Hyphens- try and avoid them.  They are easy to forget and omit when you try and type them in.
They could also be very spam sensitive.

Trademarked Names- You cannot secure a domain name for a legally trademarked name if he the company that owns the trademark has not used it.

A few do's
I always secure multiple names around my keywords.  For example, I own EasyProductLauncher.com, EasyWebLauncher.com and Easydomainlauncher.com just to name a few.  Here's the other thing with domains.  Should Launcher become the next hot keyword search, then people with go after them, and I just may be able to sell them at $1,000"s times my cost.  That's an entirely different subject called Parking and you can find more info on line. It's quite inexpensive to secure domain names and the upside is pretty strong.

I'm not in the habit of buying domain names, but if your bent on a certain name an no other will do, their are ways to find out who owns them, when they may expire.

Finally, names are not the cure all fr a successful website, but they are the right steps in the right direction.  These suggestions are guidelines only.

Good luck and try some searches here just for fun.
